Chapters 10-13 Summary
In chapter 10, Ballard accompanies Vaughan and Helen to the home of the stunt driver, Seagrave. At this home, Ballard and Helen are introduced to Vera, Seagrave's wife, and Gabrielle, a young social worker who clearly has suffered some terrible accident. Gabrielle is disfigured and wears a brace on her leg. Ballard takes Ballard to a room in the back of the house and shows him a photo album. Pictures in the album show Gabrielle in the aftermath of her accident and the following months while she recuperated from her injuries. The album also includes pictures of Ballard after his own accident, including pictures of Ballard with the women in his life. Ballard notices a sexual overtone to many of these photos, coming to understand that Vaughan has also made the connection between sex and car crashes that Ballard has made. Vaughan...
