Chapters 6-9 Summary
In chapter 6, Ballard begins renting more cars, a new one every day. Ballard drives everywhere he can, imagining the people who drove these cars before him. One afternoon, while driving a large American sedan, Ballard picks up a prostitute and takes her to a parking garage to make love in his car. However, the love making is interrupted when Ballard becomes aware of a man watching them. This man calmly puts a camera away in his car. Ballard recognizes him as Dr. Robert Vaughan, a former television personality who had suffered a horrible motorcycle accident. In chapter 7, Ballard buys a new car that is an exact replica of the one he was driving when his accident took place.
