Importance: After JoJo dies, Big Ammachi's husband tells her about the Condition. Devastated by the loss of her stepson and terrified for the life of her daughter Baby Mol, Big Ammachi prays to God in this scene for help. She is praying that God would cure the Condition or would provide someone to do so on the family's behalf. Iterations of this prayer recur throughout the novel and convey Big Ammachi's fear and desperation. Even in those times when her family appears safe and healthy, Big Ammachi lives with the undercurrent of anxiety that the Condition has created. The moment speaks to the Condition's weight on the family's psyche, and the role that faith plays in their lives, particularly Big Ammachi's.
