Summary
In Part Nine, Chapter 73, “Three Rules for a Prospective Bride, 1976, Parambil,” under Joppan’s control, Parambil “is doing well” (609). Meanwhile, Mariamma works with Joppan, Master, and Anna. She comes to rely upon their counsel as she works with the hospital.
Mariamma spends her evenings fleshing out “the Water Tree” (614). Ever since discovering the Condition’s cause, she has been reviewing the genealogy. This history begets more questions about the Condition. Anna lends her thoughts and perspective. One night, they invite the marriage broker. Mariamma asks for his help finding women who married into the family and their experiences with the Condition.
In Chapter 74, “A Mind Observed, 1976, Parambil,” Philipose’s former editor comes to the house. He tells Mariamma about Philipose’s character and writing. Mariamma wonders how Philipose’s writing related to the Condition. This notion and the stories from women...
