Summary
In Part Five, Chapter 38, “Parambil P.O., 1938 - 1941, Parambil,” Uplift Master and Shoshamma arrive in Parambil. Shoshamma recently inherited land near the estate. Master becomes involved in local politics. He discovers Philipose’s love for reading and becomes his mentor.
In Chapter 39, “Geography and Marital Destiny, 2943, Cochin,” with Philipose anticipating college, Master takes him to town for new clothing. When Philipose departs for Madras Christian College, Master struggles to say goodbye.
In Chapter 40, “Labels That Take Away, 1943, Madras,” Philipose is overwhelmed by Madras’s commotion. He tries orienting to the city and academia. However, he “feels himself sinking” (313). Then one day, his professor asks Philipose if he has trouble hearing, fearing his deafness will preclude him from completing school.
In Chapter 41. “Advantage of the Disadvantage, 1943, Madras,” after Dr. Seshaya tells Philipose he has hearing loss due to nerve damage, Philipose quits college. He...
