Summary
Chapter 3 is from Cassian's perspective. Cassian is too angry to deal with Devlon and the other males. So, he goes outside the house, stretches dramatically, and flies away. He enjoys the cold, even against his wings. He sees a few faeries flying in the distance. He knows many believe the Illyrians are the biggest threat in this area without realizing “far worse things prowled between the peaks” (23). He flies to Ramiel, known as “The heart of not only Illyria, but the entirety of the Night Court” (24). Each year, young warriors participate in the Blood Rite, a contest in which they survive a week and then scale the mountain. He had successfully done so with Azriel and Rhysand, each touching the rock at the top at the same moment. Cassian hopes the next ritual will ease some of the grumbling in the camp.
