Summary
In Chapter 13, Wheels Up, Simone watched the “Fierce Five” U.S. gymnast team compete in the 2012 Olympics and felt chills. For only the second time in Olympic history, the U.S. women’s team had won gold, and Simone had gone to training camp with two of the gymnasts, Kyla Ross and Jordyn Wieber. Other gymnasts watching along with Simone on a giant screen at Bannon’s chanted “2016 Olympics, Simone!” and Simone prayed to God that she would one day compete in the Olympics.
The next January at Martha’s training camp in Huntsville, Simone and Katelyn Ohashi were selected to compete at the American Cup, with Kyla Ross traveling along as their mentor. The three girls became very close on the meet, which was called an ‘assignment’ because the gymnasts were assigned to compete in particular meets.
