Summary
In Chapter 12, Winnie wakes up with a headache from her recent plastic surgery. She managed to wrangle an appointment with the renowned surgeon, telling him “some tale about how she’d had [her double-eyelid procedure] done in her early twenties, when all she’d cared about was making her eyes appear as large as possible” (168). When her phone rings, she feels edgy but reminds herself that the only person who has her number, and knows where she is, is Ava. She tries to remember the first time she saw “beyond Ava’s perfect, unblemished shell to the darkness smoldering within” and supposes it was when they were still at Stanford (170). When Winnie hastily left without reason, Ava had offered to let her plagiarize a paper she had completed for a similar course. Years later, Ava had agreed to write Winnie a letter...
