Summary
At the outset of Counterfeit, in Chapter 1, Ava Wong describes the first time she saw her college roommate, Winnie Fang, years after their time together at Stanford. Winnie looked starkly different than the nerdy, quiet girl she boarded with as a teenager, bedecked in designer accessories. She explained that her friend was in need of a liver transplant, and she heard that Ava’s husband was an acclaimed surgeon. Ava promised to ask Oli if he could help. Their conversation was interrupted by a wailing on the sidewalk outside. Ava ran outside to assist the nanny, Maria, who was attempting to console her son, Henri.
