The funeral for Petty Officer Daphne Farnsworth's husband is held on June 6, 1942, Koffler appears to offer his condolences. She drives back to Melbourne with Koffler.
Barbara Cotter is stationed at the Army Hospital in Melbourne and does not know that Joe is also in Australia. She is sent to Pickering's house to administer immunization to Koffler. The hospital had administered injections earlier that day to another man. Barbara finds they are going on a mission behind enemy lines, when she calls the hospital to tell them she has to wait for Koffler to arrive.
When Barbara goes into the sitting room, she sees Joe and runs into his arms. Pickering suggests Joe show her the ground so they can talk. He is leaving the next day and they go up to his room.
