Eddie
Eddie is the play’s ostensible central character and protagonist. While the play’s other three characters are all significant, in terms of playing out action and developing themes, Eddie can be seen as having the more significant journey of transformation (that is: he goes through the most sizable change); the play begins and ends with him; and he is the character with whom more of the other characters interact than any of those others. By themselves, none of these characteristics are the singular, most fundamental characteristic of an identifiable protagonist. Taken together, however, they suggest that Eddie’s story and identity are the ones that the audience is intended to most identify and engage with.
