New York City
The entirety of the novel is set in New York City, which is the most populous city in the United States of America. As Eric rides slowly in his limousine on his way to get a haircut, he occasionally stops at various places in the city. He spends time with his wife, Elise Shifrin, in restaurants and in a bookstore, he has sexual encounters with women in their apartments, and he eventually leaves his limousine to wander the city streets in the evening and at night. Eric packer lives and works in New York City, and at the end of the novel, his death there is a real— although somewhat ambiguous—possibility.
