Jefferson's Letter
In Chapter I, after revealing that her mother recently died, Jefferson presents a letter she writes to her late mother. In the letter, she tells Irma about the ways in which their relationship has complicated her understanding of her childhood and adult identities. The letter is honest and open, and does not disguise Jefferson's fraught regard for her mother both before and after her death.
