Summary

Part 1 is titled "All Our Secrets." It begins with a Prologue. An unidentified woman watches a man she has been following for weeks. The woman sees the man approach a woman on a dark street, but the woman stays hidden because “the observer only sees, never interferes” (12). The woman regrets what she has seen as it appears the man may have murdered the other woman.

Chapter 1 is told from Selena’s perspective. Selena is introduced as being married to Graham and the mother of Stephen and Oliver. Selena is working late at a literary agency. Selena knows that Geneva, the nanny, will have gotten the boys dinner, bathed, and in their pajamas. On an app, Selena watches footage from the security camera in her house and sees Graham and Geneva having sex. Selena considers how other wives did not hire attractive...
