Summary
Chapter 4:
Bess and Jenny prepare for a day of searching, Bess urging Jenny to think about going around some of the obstacles to their goal (i.e. the Chief Constable’s reluctance to reveal non-essential information) and Jenny saying that she goes straight through – as Bess well knows.
Voth inserts a footnote – more ALL CAPS CONVERSATION WITH SULLIVAN, who reveals that all the personal material Voth had included in his footnotes has been read, and considered for inclusion in the manuscript. When Voth protests, Sullivan says that according to the contract, any interpretations or additional material included in the manuscript outside of actual analysis can be considered “VIOLATION OF THE TERMS OF THE CONTRACT” (247) and potentially criminal. Sullivan then says he, and P-Quad, want to make use of them, and will.
