Summary
Chapter 9:
While exploring a rough part of the city in preparation for a theft, Jack and Bess learn that the searching for, and quarantining of, South Asians as potential plague carriers is about to intensify. They also encounter a law enforcement officer who challenges Bess for that reason. Jack talks back to him in spite of Bess urging him not to, and the two are forced to flee. When they get back to Bess’s room, they find that it has been searched, reasoning that the centinels have been told about Bess. This leads them to consider where to go next, which in turn leads Bess to confess that if she is arrested and quarantined for being South Asian, which now seems inevitable, she wants Jack to know everything about her.
