Summary

Chapter 7:

Jack restlessly paces his way around Bess’s room. Here, Voth inserts a dialogue footnote that reveals Sullivan has decided that Voth will receive no more payment until the question of whether there is, in fact, a missing page. Voth again asserts that there is none, and goes on strike until Sullivan and P-Quad accept his judgement and resume payment. Sullivan wishes him GOOD LUCK.

Bess and Jack, meanwhile, argue about whether Jack is telling the truth about what he took from the Lighthouse. Eventually Jack realizes that he wants “to be known by her more than he needed to hide from her” (162) . Here, Voth inserts a footnote referring to being broke again, and to how glad he is to be able to speak more frankly to the reader.
