Fate

Fate is defined as events that happen outside one's personal control. Fate differs from chance because fate is believed to be destined rather than happenstance. In this novel, several characters interact based at least partly on situations that could be attributed to fate.

Auburn spends hours at the Dallas hospital where her boyfriend Adam is dying. Owen's father is in the room next to Adam, meaning Owen sees Auburn and Adam. He is aware of their situation. Owen watches the scene unfold as Adam's mother Lydia insists on getting rid of Adam's art supplies after he is no longer able to paint. Though Owen does not paint at this point in time, Auburn is relieved to have him take the supplies rather than throw them away.
