Summary
Chapter 18 is titled “Owen.” Owen knew Auburn cried at the thought of saying good-bye, so, he is not surprised that she is gone before he wakes the next morning. He is surprised to find a folded piece of paper – her confession that she will think about this night “Even when I shouldn't” (243). Owen rereads the confession which provides the inspiration to finish Auburn's portrait. He barely stops over the next few days as he works. When he finally accepts that he is finished, he puts all the confessions she left recently around the painting. Owen talks to Harrison at the bar one night but does not give details about what happened between them. When he returns to the studio, he discovers the door is open and paint has been splashed on everything. He immediately assumes it was Trey. Owen rushes to the workroom...
