Laila Lalami

Laila Lalami is the book’s author. She is a Muslim woman who was born in Morocco. She is now a U.S. citizen, as well as a successful author of novels. She was born in Morocco in 1968, 12 years after Morocco became free from French colonization. As an adult, she moved to the United States to pursue a PhD in linguistics. She fell in love with and married an American man, and she became a U.S. citizen in the year 2000. Since then, she has become much more aware of the many social, political, and economic problems plaguing the United States. She has gained this awareness through education, as well as through personal experience. For example, following the 9/11 attacks, she faced much persecution because she is Muslim.
