The story is set in New York City, which is the most populous city in the United States. At the beginning of the story, Don has lived in New York City for years, and Eden has just moved there to reside for the summer before traveling to Paris. Don and Eden’s lives and interactions take them to various places in the city, such as Coney Island, where they watch Molly Welch perform.

Apartment Building

Don and Eden live on the top floor of an apartment building near Washington Square. Don has lived in that apartment for four years when Eden moves in to the adjacent apartment. Their proximity first causes friction between them, nut Don becomes infatuated with Eden after seeing her through a hole in the wall between their apartments.
