Point of View
The novel is written in third person voice except for certain portions with Aunt Ada Doom when it drifts into a first person voice, giving the reader a glimpse of the thoughts running through her mind. This first person voice is stylistically quite different than the rest of the prose in its staccato, rambling fashion. There is also small section (Chap. 7, p. 78) where the reader gets a first person perspective of Reuben's thoughts as he believes that Flora ("a woman. . . Blast! Blast!") has her intentions on the farm. The point of view is primarily from that of the main character, Flora Poste. The expression of the language describing characters and events are much like Flora would express them in voice. However, the point of view frequently shifts to other characters' perspectives for short sections and in situations where Flora is usually not present.
