Adversity

This novel centers around Katrina, a young girl who was orphaned at three when her parents died in a car accident. Katrina has lived with her grandparents since that time. Katrina's grandfather has since died, leaving Katrina alone with her grandmother, Anna. Katrina has given up some of the carefree aspects of childhood in order to help her grandmother run her coffeehouse, Anna's Old World Scandinavian Coffeehouse, the family's primary source of income. As the novel begins, the coffeehouse has become endangered because of a new coffeehouse that has opened right next door and offers more modern beverages.

As the novel progresses, Katrina begins to discover just how much trouble her grandmother's coffeehouse is in. There are multiple unpaid bills and there are repairs that need to be made to the shop itself. Katrina begins to realize that the coffeehouse is about to be forced to close. To...
