Summary
In Chapter 13, the Germans launch an attack at Mont Mouchet. Fournier suggests they wait before rescuing Gaspard’s troops. The Germans retreat that evening. The next morning, Gaspard’s men arrive, wounded and hungry. There were 150 casualties. Gaspard and his chief lieutenant, Judex, captured an armored car and two cannons. They are bringing them to Fournier. The rest of the men arrive that evening and throughout the next day. They gain a thousand new recruits, and more are coming. Winning the war seems achievable, at last.
Two days later, Gaspard arrives at Chaudes-Aigues to collect his men and negotiate with Hélène. Once again, Denis uses the radio to invite Anselm, the weapons instructor, to join them. Hélène agrees to arm Gaspard, but only if he follows her orders. She insists again that he disperse his soldiers into...
