Summary
In Chapter 7, the German officer turns out to be Gaspard. He explains that he and his men ambushed a German supply line four days ago. They took their weapons, uniforms, and trucks. He says that they only came because they thought Fournier’s men were Germans. Hélène tells him that he must hand over the uniforms to prove that he is not a collaborationist. He calls her the White Mouse and Hélène is startled to hear one of her code names. On the drive back to Château de Couffour, Hubert regrets letting Gaspard go yet again. Afraid that Gaspard will reveal their location to the Germans, the pair decide to camp out in the woods alongside Denis and Fournier’s men.
