Summary
The final section of the work describes the aftermath of the war, as well as the fates of Dot Braden and Jim Bruce. “Teedy” tells of Dot Braden’s younger brother who is declared MIA after intense and harrowing fighting in the Hurtgen Forest along the border between Belgium and Germany, a precursor to the Battle of the Bulge. Yet against the odds, Teedy had survived. Again Mundy gives first hand accounts during this extraordinary time in history to provide context and personal connection.
Chapter Fifteen, “The Surrender Message” returns to Japanese communications and of particular interest is Ambassador Oshima, a “stalwart Nazi sympathizer” (327). Also of interest was the communication stream between Russia and Japan. There were rumors of Japan’s impending surrender, but this would need to be done via another conduit as the U.S. had quite literally cut all ties...
