Act 1, Scene 5 Summary
It is the morning of Harry's wedding to Ellen. As Joshua sets up the table for the wedding banquet, Edward appears with Victoria's doll. Joshua takes it, slits it open, and trails sawdust across the ground. Just then the rest of the family arrives for the celebration. Ellen takes Betty aside and asks about sex with a man. Betty tells her to just keep still, that Harry will know what to do, and that she didn't get married to enjoy herself. Ellen disappears, and Betty rejoins the celebration, telling Clive about her missing necklace, which she had wanted to wear for the wedding. Edward accuses Joshua of stealing it, but Harry announces that Edward had taken it. Edward denies the accusation and runs off just as Mrs. Saunders arrives, announcing that the sale of her property is complete and that she's...
