Act 1, Scene 3 Summary
Betty, Mrs. Saunders, Maud and Victoria wait inside the darkened house while Clive whips the stable boys. Betty and Mrs. Saunders wonder what will happen to the stable-boys next, but Maud sternly rebukes them, saying it's none of their concern.
Edward comes in, saying that he couldn't stand to watch any more. Mrs. Saunders goes out to see what's going on. As Maud warns Betty against becoming as unwomanly as Mrs. Saunders, Betty catches Edward playing with Victoria's doll and takes the doll away, saying he must never play with dolls again. Edward protests that Victoria doesn't love or play with the doll. Then, in a rapid sequence, Betty slaps Edward, Edward cries, Ellen comes in, Betty yells at Ellen, and Ellen slaps Edward and sends him to bed. She then bursts into tears at being rebuked by Betty and runs...
