The Book
The book, or the folios of Diogenes's Cloud Cuckoo Land, symbolizes imagination. Though Diogenes's ancient text only exists in fragments, each of its readers infuse it with new meaning and emotional resonance. The book not only connects all of the characters, but binds their distinct and collective consciousnesses into one comprehensive and thus expansive tale.
Cloud Cuckoo Land
Cloud Cuckoo Land, the mystical city to which Aethon travels, symbolizes illusion. Over the course of Aethon's tale, he longs to reach this fantastical location, believing it will afford him ultimate happiness. However, not long after reaching Cloud Cuckoo Land, Aethon realizes how dull and purposeless a utopian existence really is. The city, therefore, represents human illusion, and the individual's constant search for a realm better than his present reality.
