Chapter 13 Summary

Jack Stecker walks into Division Headquarters in Guadalcanal. The arms he carries are not the ones Marines usually carry. He prefers the Garand rifle to the Springfield and he has a shoulder holster and Colt pistol that belonged to his son. He is at headquarters to meet with Vandegrift. He learns that he is leaving the next day. He is introduced to his replacement, Colonel G.H. Newberry, whom he knew from Quantico. When Newberry leaves, Stecker finds he will be sent to Australia via Hawaii where he will have a week's leave.

In Brisbane, Pickering meets with Willoughby. He wants information on Captain Fertig. He had been commissioned before the war in the Philippines and went into demolitions. Willoughby remembers him from the Polo Club. Fertig is running the guerrilla operation in the Philippines. Pickering then writes Knox that he things Rickabee's...
