1879

This novel is set in 1879. This is a time when carriages were still the main mode of transportation and women still wore corsets. This time period is most important as it impacts Charlotte Branwell. Charlotte is the head of the London Institute. She was appointed because the Consul thought that as a woman she would be easily controlled. Instead, Charlotte has shown herself to be a strong leader of the local Shadowhunters. She is tough, yet fair. For this reason, the Council wants to promote Charlotte to Consul when the current one retires. But, the current Consul fights this idea because he does not like the idea of a woman in such a position of power. In the end, however, Charlotte wins out.
