Summary
On the way to a party, Willa talks to her husband Derek about their sixteen-year-old son Ian. Unlike their other son, Sean, Ian is unmotivated, dislikes sports, and wants a break from high school. Derek says Willa is trying to negotiate with Ian who he believes is lazy. Willa feels Ian is more like her than Sean. Derek begins to get angry at a station wagon who is driving too close to them. He demands that Willa write down the other car’s license plate and speeds up. Despite not having anyone in their own lane, Derek cuts off the car. The cars slam into each other. Willa is unhurt but Derek dies in the accident.
Willa tries to plan a funeral, both sad and angry at Derek’s recklessness. She tells the police that the exact was Derek’s fault and starts...
