Summary
Willa and Sonya are selling candy to raise money for an orchestra trip to a competition. Both are 11, live in Pennsylvania, and Willa plays the clarinet while Sonya plays the flute. It is the afternoon and they only have until sunset to sell candy. At the first house, they comb their hair and discuss how they are going to present the candy. Sonya elects Willa to talk to their first customer. At the door, they meet a young mother and Willa struggles to speak. Eventually, they walk away unable to find the confidence to sell they decide to wait for the weekend.
Willa returns home to a disappointed father who tells her that their mother left the house angry. He does not say why. Willa feels her mother is the prettiest woman in town and her father argues with her mother too much...
