Substance Abuse and Loneliness
Through New York nightlife and the collapse of a marriage, Mellors depicts the discreet yet sinister ways addiction manifests. These addictions often grow out of deep place of loneliness the characters experience by being estranged from their families, places of origin, and sense of self. The most prevalent example of unhealthy coping in the novel is Frank's alcohol consumption. However, his drinking is often framed as a normal after-work activity or act of celebration. As readers, we understand his habit is far more dangerous as we watch the drama it causes in his relationship with Cleo. When Cleo asks him to reduce his drinking, he lashes out in anger and turns the blame on her for being unappreciative of all he has provided.
