Summary

In Chapter 6, Cleo and Frank met Cleo’s father and stepmother for lunch, since they were visiting New York from London. She had not seen Peter, her father, in a few years since he was absorbed in his new wife and child, and “didn’t seem to remember he had a daughter at all” (93). At the subway station, Cleo admitted to Frank that she did not tell her father she was married. Peter and his wife, Miriam, had an awkward introduction with Frank, who ordered alcohol once they arrived at the restaurant since there was “no way he was getting through this lunch without a drink” (97). Miriam commented on Frank’s age and Cleo felt ashamed under her father’s gaze. Frank offered to pay for lunch and Miriam proceeded to talk about the business she ran as well as her perfect son.
