William “Scoob” Lamar

William Lamar, who goes by the nickname Scoob (given to him by his grandmother because he liked the Scooby-Doo cartoons), is the 11-year-old protagonist of Clean Getaway. When the novel begins, Scoob has recently gotten into trouble at school. He fought a bully for picking on his best friend Shenice's brother Drake, and then he taught some classmates how to change their grades in the school's computer system. Consequently, his father is upset with him and he has been punished. Scoob is also troubled by the fact that he knows his mother (who left the family when he was a baby) has been in contact with his father, and his father has not talked to him about this. When his grandmother ("G'ma") comes to pick him up in an RV and asks him to go on a road trip with her, he is happy to comply...
