Marie

Marie is the protagonist of the story. She is an older white woman who has worked as a maid at the same motel for more than thirty years. Marie is Catholic and frequently visits her priest, but is not as conservative as other Catholics tend to be. Marie is married, but had an affair with the motel owner's son when she was in her thirties. Since then, she has remained faithful to her husband but still feels guilt for what she did.
