Summary
Class tells the story of several Italians living off inherited money as their lives intersect with each other in both Italy and New York City. Part I tells the story of Ludovica, a married woman in her early thirties temporarily living in New York. Part I is told from the perspective of an initially unnamed and unidentified narrator.
Part I begins with the narrator recounting the apartments and renovations purchased and completed for Ludovica in Rome by her parents. After getting married to Lorenzo, Ludovica moved into a house paid for by Ludovica’s parents. Lorenzo won a grant to conduct a year of graduate study at Columbia and the couple moved to New York.
The narrator reveals some details about their identity: they have died and are now witnessing the lives and experiences of people they hurt while they were alive...
