Propagation of Stereotypes by Television, Movies
Craft uses television shows and movies to demonstrate how those forms of media often propagate racial stereotypes rather than eliminating them. When school officials show the movie, The Mean Streets of South Uptown, to students at RAD, it prompts the students to feel sorry for Drew. However, it does not help them understand him. Jordan and his father come to the conclusion while watching the show Good Times that people judge Blacks based on the way they are depicted on shows.
After the students at RAD watch The Mean Streets of South Uptown, they share their sorrow with Drew and give him gifts of reparation, proof they do not understand the situation Blacks face any better than they did before watching the movie. Drew is surprised when his classmates come to him crying and apologizing because of the things they imagine...
