The Kirov

The Kirov is the apartment in Leningrad, Russia, where Lev had lived since he was five years old. He lived on the fifth floor with his friends Vera, Oleg, and Grisha. They volunteered for the Red Army and kept watch from the Kirov's rooftop. The Germans bombed the apartment, but most of the residents could leave before the building collapsed.

The Crosses

The Crosses is a notorious Leningrad prison where the Russian guards placed Lev and Kolya. At first, Lev was there by himself, and in the darkness and silence he lost his heroic dreams. Then later, the guards placed Kolya there, who maintained a brave appearance. He wrote in his journal in the darkness and comforted Lev, even sharing sausage with him. They were only there for Friday night. In the morning, the guards brought them to the colonel's mansion.
