Summary
Chapter 22 began with the Germans prying the nails out of the toolshed’s doorway, waking the prisoners, and telling them to go out. The prisoners saw that the neck of the man who had accused Markov had been slashed. As the prisoners, including Lev, Kolya, and Vika, marched, Vika marched apart from Lev and Kolya. Lev asked Kolya if he thought Vika had slashed the accuser’s throat, and he replied that he was certain she did. Then he told her that she is NKVD and that she had lied when she had described herself as an astronomy student right before the war. Rather, she had been spending her time being trained in the NKVD. Next, Kolya remarked that Lev really liked her, and then he felt curious as to how Lev could impress her. Later, the group had to pause their walking...
