Summary
In Chapter 19, Lev, Kolya, and the partisans ran from the cabin because the German officers were running in their direction. Lev thought that his memory of that flee reminded him of running with his childhood friends over melting tar. When the Germans saw the partisans, they tried to shoot them. Then a German soldier shot Korsakov's jaw off his face, and another man also fell. Lev hid in a tree and was unable to talk. All that his terrified body could do was shake. Then Kolya, Vika, and Markov saw him. As the Germans approached, Markov wanted to kill them, but Vika said that it was not worth killing mere infantry. She wanted to kill Einsatz.
