Summary
In Chapter 4, Kolya and Lev were walking together on their way to the Haymarket. Kolya lamented that Lev had never read The Courtyard Hound. He told Lev that he wanted to teach him about girls, literature, and chess. Lev thought back to how he had been a well-trained chess player, but not a brilliant one: he had known the rules, but lacked the instincts. Kolya asked Lev if he liked a girl, and he mentioned Vera, but Kolya said he did not really like her since he did not know the color of her eyes.
They arrived at the Haymarket in Chapter 5. Lev thought about how prior to the war, only the poor would go to the Haymarket, but during the war, even wealthy Party members would go. Peasants would sneak over the border with food, and Party members would hope that they...
