Chapters 7 through 9 Summary

In chapter seven, Mauro Carias invites all the members of the expedition to his personal camp prior to the departure into the jungle. Kate is obviously unsettled by the fact that Carias has many guards and tells Alex that she wonders what could possibly prompt the need for so many. Carias is very rich, having gotten his money from the natural resources of the Amazon. He provides a meal for the members of the expedition and, for the first time in days, Alex finds plenty of food that he likes to eat. Carias talks to Nadia, asking why she isn't in school. Nadia says she can read and write, and her father says she has a flair for languages. Carias says that he'd like to take Nadia to the city and offers to become her godfather. Cesar declines the offer.
