Summary

Prologue – Simon returns to his home in Brooklyn, but his mother refuses him entry. His mother knows he is a vampire, and calls him a monster and a murderer. She believes her real son has been replaced. Clary then calls to report that Maryse has discovered both Sebastian and Jace are gone.

Chapter 1, The Last Council – Clary is distraught that her boyfriend, Jace, is gone with Sebastian, her demonic half-brother. Clary’s mother, Jocelyn, reports that there is no news on their whereabouts. Shadowhunters across the country have been actively searching for them for two weeks.
