Clarissa ‘Clary’ Fray Morgenstern

Clary is a sixteen year old teenager from New York City who recently discovered that she is not human. She is part of a race of Nephilim called Shadowhunters. Not only has Clary discovered her true heritage, but she has also discovered that her biological father named Valentine is attempting to gather the Mortal Instruments so that he can rule the Shadowhunters.

Clary travels to Idris in this novel, the capital city of the Shadowhunter world Alicante. Clary has come to Idris illegally because she needs to be in Idris to find the magician, Ragnor Fell, but her travel plans changed when her brother, Jace, told her the wrong time. Clary makes her own portal into Alicante, but she lands in a cursed lake that causes her to become ill.
