Dr. Franz-Josef von Leinsdorf
Dr. Franz-Josef von Leinsdorf is one of the short story's main characters. Dr. von Leinsdorf works as a geologist, and is constantly absorbed in his research, his writings, and his discoveries. Ever since he was a child, he appreciated rocks and stones. He also enjoyed reading, skiing, and music.
As a grown man, none of Dr. von Leinsdorf's hobbies or interests have changed. Indeed, his entire life is defined by his work. He travels frequently, moving from continent to continent, and country to country, pursuing different assignments. Most recently he has been living in Africa, the past five years of which he has spent in Johannesburg, South Africa.
