Summary
One night around Christmas, Dr. von Leinsdorf and the girl were at the apartment together, when someone knocked on the door. "No one ever" visited, and Dr. von Leinsdorf had no friends that might "drop in without warning" (56). He and the girl were startled.
The girl came out of the bathroom in her towel. She was silent, but terrified. As Dr.von Leinsdorf moved towards the door, she "shook her head wildly," yanking him into the bedroom (57). She grabbed some clothes off the bed and ran into the closet, where she insisted he lock her. The man felt embarrassed seeing her crouched inside, and demanded she come out (57). She refused, threatening to throw herself out the window if he did not do as she said. Finally, he took the key, locked her inside, and put it in his pocket.
Three policemen stood outside...
