Summary
Working as a geologist, Dr. Franz-Josef von Leinsdorf travels frequently for work. His work has most recently brought him to Johannesburg, South Africa, where he has been living "for the past five years" (48). No matter where he is, Dr. von Leinsdorf takes "no interest in the politics of the countries" where he works (48).
He lives alone, and invests all of his time in his work. He is unmarried, though everyone in his life assumes he will not be single forever. The women with whom he works see something complicated and alluring in his face. Dr. von Leinsdorf, however, takes no interest in them. Some people wonder if he is engaged to a woman in his home country, Austria.
After work, Dr. von Leinsdorf visits the small supermarket near his building for groceries. He buys his supplies, and cooks for himself at home.
