Chapters 40-44 Summary

In chapter 40, Anita tries to decide what to do about the bleak situation. Anita assumes that everyone else can see in the dark but as it is black as pitch, Anita is completely blind. Anita shoots and hits Alejandro in the chest. The bullet does no damage to the thousand year old vampire. Alejandro tells Anita that he has offered Melanie her freedom from Oliver if she helps set him up. Alejandro wants Anita as his human servant, even if he has to take her by force. Losing Anita would hurt Jean-Claude. Anita fires again, this time into Alejandro's throat. If Anita could sever Alejandro's spine, he would die. Alejandro lets go of Anita and falls back screaming. Next, Anita shoots Melanie's significant other in the face. Just then, Melanie shapeshifts and goes into the water. Anita has to run.
